It's over!
The truth is, the comfortable world as we have known it for the last 60 years is coming rapidly to an end. Have you heard of vibrio vulnificus? It's a deadly little bacterium, common on the beaches of the USA and elsewhere. If it gets in through the tiniest skin cut, it can kill you in hours. A study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine (2004), brought to light the fact that doctors, even surgeons, who thought they were not being watched, didn’t bother to wash their hands much. They were caught on a hidden video camera.
This is despite the proof from Dr. Ignaz Semmelweiss, going back over a century, that surgeons washing their hands before an operation saved the lives of countless women in childbed (puerperal sepsis or “childbed fever” had over 50- 100% mortality and it was mainly caused by poor hygiene technique).
They observed just 57% of doctors washing their hands between patients. Internists and medical students were the most diligent about washing their hands. Strangely, surgeons and anesthesiologists washed their hands least often. It's unforgivable!
